We are the Underground Shakespeare Company, the only group at the University of Pennsylvania dedicated to performing works by William Shakespeare and his contemporaries. We strive to perform frequently and present new takes on Shakespeare that highlight the enduring relevance of his work.
Our group is an egalitarian company of players. For each show, prospective directors submit proposals and we vote as a company to select a director and their concept for producing the show. Roles change show by show, with members rotating between performing on stage and working behind the scenes in various roles. This flexibility means there’s lots of opportunities for personal growth in diverse areas of theatre.
We rehearse in the Rodin Underground, performing our MainStage shows in the Rodin rooftop lounge and our Fortnight productions (rehearsed in the first two weeks of the semester) outside in the Van Pelt amphitheater on College Green. Check out our past shows to get a taste of the flavor of productions we do.
Most importantly, we’re a group of friends coming from all different hometowns, university departments, and backgrounds. Come for the Shakespeare, stay for the community.
